Oh charming, christians…

As the newspaper of my choice told me lately, the protestants of germany will hold
their annual meeting of synods soon, which will be hold under the theme:

„Was hindert’s, dass ich Christ werde?“

Translation in general sense: Why not become a christian?
Well… apart from all the obvious answers that come to mind, the rediscovery of their
missionary idea gives me a trinity of trouble. First of all: I really can’t stand this lottery
mentality. Of all the religions on this planet, some people just choose one of the many
superstitions available to have a little chance at least to be not too fucked if there is,
against all odds, some sort of afterlife.

Secondly, Mr. Schneider claims that the commitment to Jesus Christ liberates you
from self-justification and self-worship. Isn’t he a real charmer? Just let the church take
care of this nasty stuff! No need to justify your actions by yourself, just let us do the job
and let US tell you if you are a good person! Ah, the sweet hypocrisy of moralists, it
never gets old.

And finally, that troubles me big time:
Are we in fact facing some sort of religious renaissance?  In the past six months, I have
faced  all kinds of religious people who keep bugging me with their silly ideas. Jehovah’s
Witnesses, Muslims with their information booth in the city centre and even some
Mormons (cross out the second ‘m’ if you please) – which I never heard of in germany
until recently. I am really beginning to feel surrounded by people who try to convince me
of their strange ideas.

I strongly belief that missionary work should be banned by law, and there definitely should
be a human right for not giving a fuck!

Entrance of the late bloomer

Greetings Earthlings,

welcome to my new (and very first) blog. It’s called “Reinventing the Libertin”.
I’ll elaborate on the title later, let me give you a few facts about myself first.

I’m from germany and I’m studying what could be best described as economics
and engineering with an emphasis on physical technologies. The correct german term
is “Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen” which is often translated to “Industrial Engineering”
but as far as I know, that just doesn’t fit.

In my free time I like to read classic literature (been a big fan of Nietzsche lately),
go swimming with my younger brother and get my butt kicked in the Martial Art of my
choice, Systema. Beside all of that, I spend quality time with this adorable girl who has
picked me as her boyfriend, for reasons I might never get ahold off.

So: Why bother writing a blog?

I am what I would call a late bloomer. The early years of my live where
not a waste at all – I had a very happy childhood, somehow I survived puberty and I was
“as much 16″ as a teenager as you could possibly imagine.  But lets put it this way:
I was not very eager to do something with my live.

This blog will document my efforts to find my goals in life, complete every task on my bucketlist
and it will be my place for the occasional vent if I encounter exceptionally stupid ideas.

The word “Libertin” has a quite different meaning in german & french compared to its english
equivalent. In german, we differentiate between a Libertin of Morals – which describes a person
not attached to sexual standards and traditions – and a Libertin of Mind – which describes a free-thinker.
Nevertheless – contrary to its meaning in english, the german word describes best what I am trying
to become – a free-thinker, who will find his very own maxims in live.
